Donna Hovet was overwhelmed and excited by the number of people who showed up. The track was jammed packed with walkers and that was a very good sign.

Hovet's son, A.J. is actually helping to keep the memory alive of a boy named Anthony Nickols, Jr. who grew up in Rialto and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1997. Sadly, he succumbed to the disease two years later. A.J., 14, also suffers from cancer and in Anthony's honor will be the recipient of some of the funds raised at the 3rd annual Inland Empire Walk for Life to Cure Childhood Cancer held April 16 at Eisenhower High School in his memory. "Right now, A.J. is in remission," said Hovet. "It's very exciting for him to be here today." Although Anthony and A.J. never had the chance to meet, the two are similar.Anthony was very courageous and loved life to the fullest. He loved to draw and also enjoyed playing football. After his untimely death, a foundation was created in his name and the walk is done annually in his honor to raise funds to help find a cure for childhood cancer. "He was so courageous," said Patricia Nickols, who added that the event is held where her son grew up. "For us, it's our way of keeping his legacy alive."
