Farrell, now a retired water department supervisor, was a new city employee when Fire Chief Harry Blickenstaff came to his house and said, "I need you to join the volunteer fire department." Since it didn't appear he had a choice, he agreed.

"When I first came to California from Brooklyn, I got a job mowing lawns, and I didn't even have a lawn of my own. Working for the city of La Verne was great because employees are so committed to community.
