Initially dumbstruck, he ran outside of the La Verne church to shout, "The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor!"

Seabee Served Ignoring Racism

"I'd heard the news on the Al Jarvis radio program," Aguilera recalled. "When I went outside and told the guys, they said I was lying about us being at war. They asked if I'd heard about it from a Mexican paper. I told them it was on the radio.

"You should have seen their faces," he said, shaking his head. "They didn't want to believe me, but they had to believe it."

America was at war, and freedom was threatened.
