His pleas were answered by eight engines and two water tenders who sped onto the narrow, winding road in Running Springs. Dozens of bone-tired firefighters valiantly tried to make a stand against a wildfire that kept changing directions. A half-dozen more off-duty firefighters with homes on the street also heeded his call.
