Retailers Nervous As Back-to-School Shopping Season Begins

The back-to-school shopping season is the second-largest retail event of the year, taking a back seat only to Christmas. The National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group, expects families with school age children to spend an average of $548 per household on school supplies, computer related equipment and back-to-school clothing. This would be a 7.7 percent drop over the levels of spending that occurred in 2008.

"The buying pattern of consumers has shifted," says Ruben Escobosa, managing director of retail at Colliers International. "People are cutting corners. They are focused on price and on deep discounts which means thinner margins for many already troubled retailers."
