Noteworthy Progress

Summary


As a parent, teacher and volunteer for the past 20 years at Claremont's Vista del Valle Elementary School, I was appalled at the headline for the March 11 article about Vista's School Improvement Plan. In the 10 years since the beginning of statewide California standards testing, Vista has increased its overall achievement scores more than any other school in Claremont. Its progress in math and science has been particularly noteworthy.

Vista is a small, family-friendly place, but its size works against the school in meeting its required progress goals each year, especially in English and language arts. Just over 200 students take the statewide test each year, so that a few new students who are very talented or who struggle with academics can swing the scores significantly one way or the other from one year to the next.
