Longtime Chino Resident Turns 95

Summary

Glen W. Farson, also known as Shadow, turns 95 years old on Monday. A resident of Magnolia Avenue in Chino since 1957, Glen was born Dec. 20, 1909 in Spencer, Idaho. His youth was filled with interesting stories and experiences. As a young child, he and his family traveled by covered wagon in a move from Spencer, across the state to Boise, Idaho. When he was a bit older and living in Florida, he made coal and sold it to moon shiners for their stills.

He later actually did a short stint as a "moonshine runner." His daughter Persis, named after Glen's wife of over 57 years, tells me that her dad has probably had well over 100 different jobs in his life. When he and his father spent time in the work camps in the south, his dad would often tell the cooks at a new camp that it was his son's birthday and he loved to cook. So, the cooks would turn over the makeshift kitchen to Glen as a birthday gift, and Glen, his dad, and the others, would enjoy one of Glen's lovingly prepared "birthday" meals instead of the hastily prepared concoctions they would have had under the camp's regular cooks. In fact, Glen still loves to cook; he cooked Thanksgiving dinner for 20 people just last month.
