As Hurricane Katrina pummeled the nation's Southeastern coast Monday, economists worried that disruptions at several Northern California oil refineries could take a much greater toll on consumer gasoline prices.

A fire last week at a Tesoro Corp. oil refinery in Martinez and planned maintenance and setbacks at other refineries have sharply reduced the amount of gasoline available to the state's retail gas stations.
