PASADENA - Caltech has long had a history of building record- breaking telescopes.

In 1949, it opened Palomar Observatory near San Diego, which at the time had the world's biggest lens, more than 16 feet across. Today, Caltech's two Keck telescopes on the island of Hawaii are the largest eyes on the planet.
