Fontana Students Excel at History Day Event

Summary

Most adults don't even get to meet a president, but Matthew Guerra of Almeria Middle School in Fontana was able to sit down and interview President Gerald Ford. "That was an amazing experience to talk to a former president," said his History Day coach Sherry Hamilton of Fontana A.B. Miller High School. "He's a very gracious and kind man." About 200 students from nine school districts and two private schools submitted 113 entries in this year's 16th annual San Bernardino County History Day competition March 26 at Fontana A.B. Miller High School, which co-sponsored the event with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.

Students in the junior and senior divisions competed in five categories - exhibits, performances, documentaries, research papers and Web sites - on a variety of topics related to this year's theme, "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding," while elementary students competed in a poster contest.
