The sudden loss of a major transmission line and high demand on the power grid caused 500,000 Southern California Edison customers to lose power for 35 minutes throughout several communities Thursday afternoon.

High temperatures coupled with high demand forced the California Independent System Operator to declare a Stage 3 emergency and impose rolling blackouts while power was restored, said Southern California Edison spokeswoman Susan Heard.
