Annual Chili Cook-Off Will Benefit Inland Valley Recovery

Hot or mild, beans or no beans. It's all personal preference. But the public really will get the final say on which beefy concoction gets top honors this year at the upcoming Chili Cook- off, sponsored by the Bill Landecena family and the Upland-Foothill Kiwanis Foundations. The fundraising benefit is set for from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the courtyard of the Upland City Hall complex.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Jurors deadlocked on Friday in the trial of a federal meat inspector accused of murdering his neighbor, even after the judge allowed attorneys to make a second round of closing arguments in a last-ditch effort to break the impasse. Prosecutors vowed to retry Kent Craig and said they were surprised jurors didn't convict him for the October 2002 killing of Craig Corle.

Fair Delivers Info On Services, Programs

POMONA - The Civic Center will be abuzz today as more than 50 groups representing city departments, nonprofits and local-service clubs will come together for the Pomona Information Fair. Apartment Complex Upheld

FONTANA - A 233-unit apartment complex planned for the northern end will be the first large-scale apartment complex in the city in about 20 years. On Thursday, after five hours of testimony - mainly opposition - and discussion, the City Council by a 4-1 vote denied an appeal of the Planning Commission's approval of the Lytle Creek Apartments.

Senate Oks Addition to Brown Act

A bill tightening restrictions on how city council members make policy decisions passed the state Senate this week. Sponsored by state Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, the bill would add to the state's open-meeting law, the Ralph M. Brown Act, which states that council members cannot meet outside of a public meeting to come to an agreement on how they will vote on an issue.

Autozone to Pay $1.5 Million

An auto-parts chain accused of charging above-advertised prices and improperly disposing of hazardous waste has agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a civil suit filed by state and county prosecutors. District attorney's offices in San Bernardino, San Diego, Monterey and San Joaquin counties joined forces with the state attorney general in an environmental- and consumer-protection civil suit against AutoZone. Foothill Transit Weighs Options for Boosting Fares to Fight Deficit

Bus fares in the San Gabriel Valley could go up this winter as Foothill Transit, the main bus service for the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys, struggles to cope with increased costs and slipping funding. While the $1 base fare for local buses would not increase, officials are contemplating increases to monthly passes, transfer rates, discounted fares, Commuter Express services and other fares.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies arrested three people early Thursday after a car chase and foot pursuit. Sheriff's deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga station responded to a call at 12:17 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Malachite Avenue and Edelweiss Street, sheriff's Cpl. Jim Beebee said.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies issued citations, towed vehicles and made arrests on Thursday during a vehicle-safety checkpoint. The checkpoint was at Etiwanda Avenue and 6th Street, according to a sheriff's news release.

Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase

ONTARIO - A man was arrested Thursday evening after trying to elude police during a high-speed chase that concluded in Riverside. An Ontario police officer spotted a speeding Acura about 10:15 p.m. in the area of Sultana Avenue and G Street, Lt. Brad Wirtz said.
