One Mile Fun Run June 24 in Upland

Family Fitness Fun Run, sponsored by Chick-fil-A at Colonies Crossroads in Upland, Ontario Mills and Chino Hills, will take place at 7 a.m. on June 24 at the Upland location. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and will include a one mile walk/ run for all ages.

RIALTO - The men, women and children still residing on East Jackson Street are leery of gray-shirted code enforcement officers. Code enforcers have scrutinized every crevice of the 113 apartments here since March, flagging more than 1,000 instances of illegal decay, disrepair and dereliction.

State Official Urges Vaccinations for Mumps

The state public health officer has recommended that people receive mumps vaccines to prevent the outbreak, currently in the Midwest, from spreading to California. So far this year, there have been four confirmed mumps cases in California, similar to the numbers seen in prior years.

Volunteers Needed for Reading Program

CHINO HILLS - Volunteers are still needed for the James Thalman Chino Hills Branch Library summer reading program, and mandatory orientation courses will begin today for those who have already signed up. JoAnn Collins, the library's young adult specialist, said volunteer space is limited. However, those who are interested must turn in an application by June 23 to attend the orientation.

SAN BERNARDINO - Anti-illegal immigration legislation modeled after a proposal in San Bernardino has advanced in a small city in eastern Pennsylvania, adding fuel to the highly debated issue. As San Bernardino residents await a court ruling to see whether they will be voting on the city's "Illegal Immigration Relief Act'' backed by activist Joseph Turner, the City Council in Hazleton, Pa., on Thursday pushed a similar ordinance toward approval.

Three Injured in Fontana Vehicle Collision

FONTANA - Three people were injured Friday evening in a car collision. Specifics were not immediately available, but firefighters with the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the collision at 9:31 p.m. at 14819 Slover Ave., fire dispatcher Otto Schramm said When they arrived, firefighters found three people who needed to be cut out of a vehicle, he said. Fire personnel had the victims free by 9:42 p.m., Schramm said.

Lottery Revenue Falls Short After Adding Mega Millions

SACRAMENTO - One year after California joined the multi-state Mega Millions lottery game, sales have fallen short of expectations as the new game has cannibalized some sales of the existing Super Lotto program. Combined sales of Super Lotto Plus and Mega Millions tickets are likely to reach about $1.2 billion this year, short of the $1.4 billion projected when California joined the 11-state game in June 2005, said California Lottery acting director Joan Borucki.

City, County to Dedicate Chino H.S. Track

City and county officials will dedicate the track today to the community at a ceremony. The track used to be riddled with holes, but now it is a smooth burgundy color made out of Tartan material.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A killer was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for bashing to death an elderly Upland man during a robbery. Christopher Martinez broke into Richard Harter's mobile home and attacked him in his bathroom.
